Meet Kimberley & Bartholomew from Son of a Peach Pizzeria & The Sunshine Doughnut Co.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this month, we want to celebrate and recognize couples who work together in business everyday.

Kimberley & Bartholomew Nadherny from Son of a Peach Pizzeria & The Sunshine Doughnut Co.!

  1. How did you both meet?
Bart and I met in Washington, D.C. I was pursuing my masters at Georgetown University, while Bart was a Chef at one of the most prestigious restaurants in D.C.
  2. Why did you start working/open your business together?
Simply? Cause we’re dreamers. With my art, design and business background, it seemed like an easy concept – natural, to say the least. We are both creatives that not only know the value of hard work, but truly believed in our vision – love for food, art and each other – making it seem possible, making us feel invincible. We spent our weekends cooking for friends and family; learning, teaching, constantly growing.
  3. Tell us a little bit about yourselves and your business. (i.e. What is your unique  offering?)
We’re not trying to be something we’re not. We believe in the foundation of local ingredients, tons of flavor and old world along with modern techniques that drive the Peach and Sunshine to be what it is today. What we are building is a space that allows our staff and our guests an opportunity to experiment and explore, to both work with and taste new flavors and foods without any pretense or culinary superiority. We’re building a place where we want to hang out, making the foods we love to eat.
  4. When did you open your business in Downtown Burlington?
Our little Peach opened on May 8, 2014 to just 21 seats. After the death of my stepfather, JJ (hint, hint – it’s the ONLY pizza on the menu with a name) only six weeks after we opened – we started build out on our second side. The Peach as you know it today, opened and expanded within 6 months of operating. Sunshine opened in July of 2016, as just a little doughnut shoppe (taking over 30 years of Chinese food) and rapidly expanding into the space you see now, in April of 2018 – two weeks before giving birth to our son, Woodward.
  5. What made you choose Downtown Burlington?
Complete Accident. We were pointed to some random direction to check out spaces in Hamilton. It wasn’t for us, so we left and started driving around and randomly went over the Skyway and exited North Shore, only to find the lovely downtown. It has definitely changed in the last five years.
  6. What other downtown businesses do you frequent and do business with?
We eat and support local, from banking to restaurants, our lives are encompassed in Burlington. We often frequent places like Mikado, Centro and Kelly’s.
  7. If you had a piece of advice for other couples starting a business together, to help them succeed, what would it be?
Stay in your lane. Speak respectfully. Know your strengths and weaknesses; and always, always be aware, on top of, all over, your financials. Lastly and most importantly, make sure you create space – physical, emotional and mental space. It will always make you appreciate your partner so much more.
  8. Do you have any Valentine’s Day traditions?
Our tradition is to always, always, stay in and make dinner together. This year, we’ll be making dinner with our little Woods.
