There’s something special about patio season in Burlington Downtown.
As the weather warms and the days grow longer, patios become gathering places where friends meet for lunch, families enjoy dinner outdoors, and visitors discover new local favourites. The sights and sounds of bustling patios help bring the downtown to life, creating the vibrant atmosphere that makes summer in Burlington so memorable.
This year, the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) is helping make the outdoor dining experience even better with the installation of new pedestrian walkways and streetscape enhancements throughout the downtown core.
Located along some of Burlington Downtown’s busiest restaurant and patio destinations, including Pine Street, John Street, and the north side of Lakeshore Road, the custom-built pedestrian walkways create safer and more accessible routes for visitors while supporting expanded outdoor dining opportunities for local businesses.
The new infrastructure includes more than 300 metres of pedestrian bypass walkways, allowing guests to move comfortably through the downtown while enjoying some of the area’s most popular patios, cafés, and restaurants. Decorative planter boxes filled with seasonal flowers and greenery frame the entrances and exits of each walkway, adding colour and beauty to the streetscape while helping create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone visiting the downtown.
“These enhancements help position Burlington Downtown as a destination where people want to gather, dine, shop locally, and spend time,” says Brian Dean, Executive Director of the BDBA. “Creating welcoming public spaces not only strengthens our local economy but also enhances our sense of community.”
Patios play an important role in Burlington Downtown’s success during the summer months. Outdoor dining helps create foot traffic, encourages visitors to spend more time exploring the area, and supports the restaurants, retailers, and service-based businesses that make up the downtown business community.
“Outdoor dining and patios are much more than seasonal features. They are key economic drivers that generate foot traffic, create energy, and encourage investment in the downtown core,” says Liza Bouchard-Bain, Chair of the BDBA Board of Directors. “Busy patios create ripple effects that benefit nearby retailers, shops, and service-based businesses.”
Local business owners have already seen the positive impact patio season has on the downtown experience.
“We’re incredibly grateful to be part of Downtown Burlington’s patio program, which brings so much energy, warmth, and connection to the city each summer,” says Kim Nadherny of Son of a Peach Pizzeria. “There’s something special about seeing people gathering outdoors, enjoying great food, and creating memories together. It’s an atmosphere that supports small businesses while showcasing the vibrant spirit of Downtown Burlington.”
Brian Bustamante of Lettuce Love Café and HEAL Wellness shares a similar sentiment.
“Patio season brings incredible energy to the downtown core,” says Bustamante. “At Lettuce Love and HEAL, we experience firsthand how increased foot traffic and a more pedestrian-friendly environment positively impact local businesses throughout the summer. The flower boxes also add beautiful greenery while creating a natural separation between pedestrian traffic and outdoor dining spaces.”
The BDBA would also like to recognize and thank Mallord Farm Inc. and Perspective Vision for their support in sponsoring the decorative flower boxes that help enhance the downtown streetscape.
