In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this month, we want to celebrate and recognize couples who work together in business everyday.

Meet Kim (Posh Couture) and Marlon M. Roefe, Lawyer 

1. How did you both meet?

Online, and Marlon lied about his height. He’s short. Kim’s not.

2. Why did you start working/open your business together?

We each had our own business locations, and circumstances arose where premises came available which would provide a teriffic location for Kim’s luxury consignment store, and Marlon’s law practice, and we decided to take advantage of these circumstances and relocate our businesses to our current location.

3. Tell us a little bit about yourselves and your business. (i.e. What is your unique offering?)

Kim has a love of fashion, people and a loves a good deal. This made an excellent combination for her consignment store where she is able to provide personal service, great products and a good price for her customers and her consignors.

Marlon is a litigation lawyer. He has 40 years of experience advocating his clients’ interests before the the courts. With this broad experience he is knowledgeable, compassionate, enthusiastic and engaged. He really loves what he does. He is always learning. There are always new challenges, and Kim’s store is right above his office.

4. When did you open your business and what made you choose Downtown Burlington?  

We live down town. There is truth to the cliché that its a terrific place to live, play and work. Marlon practiced downtown Toronto since 1981 and came to Burlington in 2001 after we met and fell in love. A Hallmark love story. We didn’t want to uproot Kim and her boys who were established in Burlington. Kim, who was a manger at Royal Bank for over 25 years opened Posh Couture last year, at its downtown Brant street location, and we relocated to our current location on Pearl street, this past October. We are very fortunate to live and work downtown, and this adds so much to our lives.

5. What other downtown businesses do you frequent and do business with?

This is like an Oscar speech and apologies to any we left out.

6. If you had a piece of advice for other couples starting a business together, to help them succeed, what would it be?

Like each other, respect each other, be nice when you argue, be honest even if it hurts, accept each other’s faults because with their strengths it makes them who they are and who you love, accept when you are wrong and try not to gloat when you are right, and don’t ever forget you love each other and why, do little things for each other, show your partner that you are in love, don’t take each other for granted. Remember neither you nor your partner can read each other’s mind. Communicate. It will be tough and it will be worth it.

7. Do you have any Valentine’s Day traditions?

Good food whether dining in or out, valentines cards, gifts which say “I love you”, and we unwind enjoying each other’s company and love.
