This famous slogan created by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs or International Chess Federation might have been on to something when they put these words to paper. What connects a family more then a game? And what is our community if not a family in its own nature? Our BIA strives to bring our community members together in the most meaningly ways possible. To welcome. To connect. To engage. To foster then sense of family. With this in mind (and some certainly fitting Latin), we proudly welcome our newest interactive initiative: The Burlington Downtown Chess Garden.

This exciting pilot project, part of the #spacestoplaces initiative, kicks off November 24th, concluding December 8th. Proudly located in the heart of downtown, Civic Square, the Chess Garden features a beautifully designed, large-format chessboard. With an impressive count of 32 square foot pieces creating the board, literally step into the game and immerse yourself both mentally and physically. Complete with 32 grab-able, moveable, life-sized pieces, this initiative is meant to welcome players of all ages and skill levels. Whether visitors are seasoned chess enthusiasts or first-time learners, the space offers an accessible and engaging environment to think, play, and gather.

As with any physical game, safety always comes first! This pilot is weather dependant, and may be temporarily moved should significant snowfall occur during the pilot period. Located steps aways from the Brant Street entrance to City Hall, the board is on a slight down-grade, so be careful while navigated stepping or mobility devices.

We care about our players’ safety, and the safety of the animation as well. Please note that this pilot location is monitored 24/7 by a closed circuit camera system. Entering the animation space is taken as acknowledge and consent of this safety measure. All 32 chess pieces are equipped with GPS tracking systems, catalogued by piece type. Should the pieces exit the animation space, each piece has the ability to be tracked down to its physical location.
