Thank You Burlington
Posted: Aug 24, 2016

What an incredible weekend to be Canadian.

Music brings people together. So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.” – Gord Downie, 2014.

Case in point.

We initially anticipated 2,000 people would attend Burlington’s CBC broadcast of the Tragically Hip’s live concert from Kingston. As the day drew closer, our community’s response to this event was overwhelming.

When the sun set in Spencer Smith Park, more than 10,000 people showed up carrying lawn chairs and blankets to watch this historic broadcast, and to celebrate Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip’s contribution to the Canadian music scene.

We all watched as Gord sang his heart out to an incredible 21 song set list plus 9 more in three awe-inspiring encores alongside the rest of Canada.

Thank you to all partners involved in making this happen; Marianne Meed Ward and the Special Events Team from the City of Burlington, Ontario, the businesses of downtown Burlington, RTO 3, Ashen White Audio Visual ExecutivesPM Wyre Ltd.Curdz PoutinerieHalton Regional Police ServiceSt. John’s AmbulanceSound of Music Festival,  Discover Burlington OntarioJoseph Brant Hospital Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society (Halton Chapter), and of course Jeannine Tymkow and the local community for beginning the conversation.

Special thanks to the CBC for broadcasting this 3-hour concert national wide commercial free, and allowing us to partner with you.

A whole-hearted thank you to The Tragically Hip for uniting a nation and giving their fans a cross-country tour they’ll never forget.

And lastly, of course, we will miss you Gord. We don’t have to wait and see, fully completely.

Stay tuned for the total amount raised for the Canadian Cancer Society (Halton Chapter) and the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation Cancer Clinic. We will be planning a cheque presention the first week of September please stand by for media advisory.

You can also sign the book of well wishes that we are sending to The Tragically Hip. It will be in the City of Burlington lobby at 426 Brant Street.
