What an incredible weekend to be Canadian.
“Music brings people together. So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.” – Gord Downie, 2014.
Case in point.
We initially anticipated 2,000 people would attend Burlington’s CBC broadcast of the Tragically Hip’s live concert from Kingston. As the day drew closer, our community’s response to this event was overwhelming.
When the sun set in Spencer Smith Park, more than 10,000 people showed up carrying lawn chairs and blankets to watch this historic broadcast, and to celebrate Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip’s contribution to the Canadian music scene.
We all watched as Gord sang his heart out to an incredible 21 song set list plus 9 more in three awe-inspiring encores alongside the rest of Canada.
Thank you to all partners involved in making this happen; Marianne Meed Ward and the Special Events Team from the City of Burlington, Ontario, the businesses of downtown Burlington, RTO 3, Ashen White Audio Visual Executives, PM Wyre Ltd., Curdz Poutinerie, Halton Regional Police Service, St. John’s Ambulance, Sound of Music Festival, Discover Burlington Ontario, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society (Halton Chapter), and of course Jeannine Tymkow and the local community for beginning the conversation.
