Sakura in Bloom 🌸
Have you partaken in “hanami” yet? 🌸
Hanami is a centuries-old Japanese tradition of flower viewing – a beloved pastime celebrated globally, especially during cherry blossom season. Every spring, the cherry blossom trees at Spencer Smith Park come alive with beautiful blooms, inviting the community to take part in this joyful celebration of nature.
Known as sakura in Japan, these stunning cherry blossoms bloom from late April to early May, offering a perfect moment to pause, reflect, and enjoy the beauty around us…and you can experience it right here in Burlington! These blooms are more than just a seasonal delight; they symbolize the deep-rooted friendship between Burlington and its sister city, Itabashi, a ward in Tokyo, Japan.
This partnership was established in 1989 to foster cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and collaboration between the two cities. Over the years, the relationship has enriched both communities, promoting shared experiences and a deeper appreciation of each other’s cultures.
A highlight of this connection is the annual celebration of cherry blossoms, held each spring in our very own Spencer Smith Park. The Sakura Festival is a key event in Burlington Downtown, where the community comes together to enjoy Japanese cultural performances and activities, honoring the friendship with Itabashi.
This year marks 35 years of Burlington’s sister city relationship with Itabashi; a milestone which reflects the strength and lasting impact of their connection. The partnership continues to exemplify Burlington’s dedication to global understanding and cultural exchange.
Be sure to visit Spencer Smith Park and catch these gorgeous blooms before they’re gone for the season! Don’t forget to tag us in your cherry blossom photos for a chance to be featured on our socials 🌸📸
