While I grew up in Burlington, my wife Stephanie and I have lived here for 6 years together and have enjoyed building a life together in Burlington. We both work – myself as an Investment Advisor for CIBC Wood Gundy, and Steph as a freelance graphic designer and we have a 19 month old son, Lachlan. Needless to say, our weeks are busy with work, training sessions at the Gym on Pearl, golf, yoga and all things baby.
This is why I so look forward to our Saturdays – where we can spend the day and get out of the house together as a family. As a true Burlingtonian, I may be a bit biased, but I have to say (and my Toronto-native wife would agree) that downtown Burlington is the perfect place to spend our day together as a family.
In spite of the ugly weather we’ve had this winter, our first stop is Kelly’s Bake Shoppe for a late-morning snack and a coffee. The staff are always so friendly and personable and the girls recognize Lachlan and always ask about him (which makes us feel pretty special!). Plus, the gluten-free baked goods are perfect for a little guy with a gluten allergy! We felt lucky when this gem opened its doors about a year ago.
Brant Street is not only somewhere to find great food and drink, but also the perfect place to conduct some “retail therapy”. We both love Centro’s for a little something to add to our home décor; some fresh flowers or plants and in the summer, we’ll pick up some fresh and locally grown produce from the market. Retail therapy isn’t complete without a couple pieces for our own wardrobe, and Joelle’s (and Jeff’s Guy Shop) is the perfect place where we always find something to treat ourselves.
For lunch we like to sit out on the Queen’s Head patio and enjoy a drink and a burger. It’s a nice change for me to be sitting on this patio on the weekends, instead of my usual longing for it during the weekdays as I view it out the window from my office across the street!
After lunch, should the little guy be up for it before his nap, we will walk it off down Spencer Smith park and onto the pier. This is such a wonderful part of town and we feel lucky to be able to take advantage of the convenience and beauty of it.
On the note of “treating ourselves”, we would then get Lachlan a babysitter for the evening and head back downtown for some pizza, pasta and drinks at Eatalia. We love the classic and comfortable atmosphere, and the food is fantastic at a really great price. We always have a fantastic time here; it is a great way to wrap up our perfect Saturday in downtown Burlington!
