This week, meet co-owners Darrin Piercey and Jay Labelle Stacey
from The Cover Guy!
- Why did you start/open your business?
I started the cover guy when I was 18 while at the CNE selling hot tubs, a customer asked if I could get a replacement cover for his Jacuzzi Espree. Hot tubs were not an everyday thing in these days so it was odd to be selling them, or let alone replacing a cover for one out in the field. I was able to source the cover from a friend of mine who made winter and summer pool covers.
I realized that if one person needed a hot tub cover more in my community must as well. I started a small word advertisement in the local shopping news papers for Oakville, Burlington, and Milton and sold 70 – 80 covers a year till 2005. Darrin and I started placing ads all over Canada and started our website The Cover Guy. Today we sell over 30,000 hot tub covers a year, and we hold the same values and mission statement we had in the beginning, offering our customers perfect fitting quality covers at the best price available.
The name of the company came from when I would call back customers I would always say hi it’s Jay the cover guy calling.
Some common questions back in the day when we just started selling Hot Tubs was, how can that fit in your bathroom, how will you fill it or empty it every time you use it.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business. (i.e. What is your unique offering?)
Jay: I have been in the pool and spa industry since I was 13 and my older brother opened a swimming pool store. As I stated above, it was just by chance someone asked for a replacement hot tub cover and I sourced it from a friend in the industry.
Darrin: Our unique offering is providing custom online purchasing of hot tub covers and accessories.
- When did you open your business in Downtown Burlington?
Jay: We moved to downtown Burlington in August 2016. The reason we moved to downtown Burlington was because it was a far better investment property wise, and it was convenient for our staff and walk-in customers.
- What made you choose Downtown Burlington?
Darrin: The growth potential and downtown vibe
- What are the biggest benefits of having your business located in the downtown Burlington core?
Jay: Our staff and customers seem to really enjoy Downtown Burlington and it is a great investment
Darrin: Being close to the lake, big events at Spencer Smith Park
- What other downtown businesses do you frequent and do business with?
Jay: All of our staff shop, dine, and enjoy the downtown businesses
Darrin: All restaurants
- What special events do you have coming up in 2019 that you would like the BDBA to promote and/or publish on our website and social media outlets?
Jay: It’s our 15th anniversary so we will be doing all kinds of promotions throughout the year. Lesley Shea our Marketing Director is excited to offer exclusive promotions to Burlington residents and eager to run contests and cross-promotions with the BDBA.

- If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?
Jay: Keep at it, work hard and diligent, but be patient on overall growth, it takes time to build a business. Be resourceful, be creative, be exciting, and be new.
Darrin: Set goals
- What is your favourite holiday? Why?
Jay: My favourite holiday is definitely Christmas. Decorations and excitement and most everyone is happy.
Darrin: Christmas because it brings families together
- If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life.. what would it be?
Jay: Frosted mini wheats with milk
