This week, meet Amanda from AmandaSteene Cosmetics! 

  1. Why did you start/open your business?

Working as a freelance makeup artist for over a decade, and even though I had an extensive makeup kit, I could never find the perfect match for my clients. I would always find myself mixing and blending products to match a client’s skin tone and create their perfect look. The problem was they couldn’t easily replicate that look, and it wasn’t something they could buy. That’s when it hit me. What if there was a destination where people could come and have their products individually created for them and their custom formula would be recorded for easy reorder. Now, with over 3,500 satisfied clients we are giving control of cosmetics back to the customer – “We are all unique, and our makeup should be too!”

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business. (i.e. What is your unique offering?) 

In a few words, I am creative, passionate, adventurous, well-travelled, social, and love animals. My business reflects all of these attributes. My vision is to provide one-of-a-kind unique custom products that are affordable and cruelty free. We currently offer custom lipstick and gloss, custom foundation and concealer and our plan is to continue to expand the range of products you can customize with us, with pressed powders next on the list. We also have a complete product range as well as bridal and makeup services. Creating your unique product is an experience that combines science, technology and fun, and you leave with your new custom makeup that never existed before. Let’s not forget the fully stocked bar where you can come in and enjoy a glass of wine, cocktail or other choice while you relax and enjoy the experience. You even get to name your new creation and kiss a card for our kiss wall. Not only do we have fun in store, but we also come to you for events, weddings, etc. Just a totally unique girls’ night creating custom makeup. It’s great for bachelorettes and bridal showers too. 

  1. When did you open your business in Downtown Burlington? 

 June 2016

  1. What made you choose Downtown Burlington? 

There are so many reasons and I’m sure all of us downtown business owners feel the same way. The major reasons are the people, the sense of community and the support from all the local businesses and clients. I frequently hear from my clients that they will always shop locally if what they need is available. Where can you find a community anywhere in the world as supportive as that. My business is located at 2017 Lakeshore Road opposite the Waterfront Hotel (corner of Lakeshore & John St). We are very grateful for such a perfect location.

  1. What are the biggest benefits of having your business located in the downtown Burlington core? 

We love downtown, and really enjoy being a part of the community and all the events. It’s the benefit of being a part of the up-market boutique feel that downtown Burlington has to offer. I always say “it’s my Burlington Bubble and no one can burst it”. People are always looking for something new and exciting and I’m so happy to offer such a unique experience to all my current and future clients.

  1. What other downtown businesses do you frequent and do business with?

(i.e. banking, dentist, shopping, where do you eat, etc.)  

Pretty much all of them. We love going out to eat at Pepperwood’s Bistro, Son of a Peach, and Emma’s, to name just a few. Styled Lounge for a blow out and mani/pedis of course. I work out at F45 and the new Benchmark Fitness. My glasses come from Dr. Facey at Tracy Brodie & Associates, and I can often be found having coffee and meetings at Tamp or Coffee Culture. There are so many other great local downtown businesses I love but don’t have the space! I have also been very fortunate to be involved in several local charity events and look forward to continuing to be a key part of our downtown community.

  1. What special events do you have coming up in 2017 that you would like the BDBA to promote and/or publish on our website and social media outlets?

We have had several events already this year. We look forward to many more in the winter and further details will be posted on our website and Facebook page as they become available. One big recent milestone for our company was our second year anniversary at the store. To celebrate this we just launched our monthly makeup masterclass series which teaches different techniques like Smokey Eyes, how to match your colours to your skin tone and personality, and so many others.   1. If you had a piece of advice for our new businesses, to help them succeed, what would it be?

We are a new business and I know it can be tough to start out not knowing where to invest your time and energy, and what will be the best return on advertising and marketing dollars spent. For me a lot has been trial & error to see what works best, but I found what really helps the most is networking and cross referrals. Word of mouth in the Downtown Core is really important so be nice to your neighbours, and never give up!

  1. What is your favourite holiday? Why?

(Christmas? Easter? St. Patrick’s Day? Etc.) 

I truly love Thanksgiving. Spending time with my family and feasting during the fall – my favourite time of year. I love it when the leaves change – the colours are so beautiful and inspiring which brings me full circle to creating the perfect shades of Cosmetics!
