Brunch in Downtown Burlington

– written by guest blogger James Gike

Brunch is my favourite time of the day where you can start your meal with eggs and bacon, and finish with seafood or pastries!

We’re lucky to have so many great places open for breakfast/brunch on weekdays & weekends. No matter where you choose, there’s something for everyone. Whether it’s eggs and bacon, Shakshuka, or Pain Perdu, even the pickiest will find a delicious dish in downtown Burlington.

Coop: Wicked Chicken
370 Brant Street
Brunch is served: Saturday & Sunday from 11:00am – 3:00pm

Walking into to Coop is like walking back into the 90’s. Old music posters, vintage comic book covers, and more cover the walls of this retro urban eatery. They’re known for their fried chicken. Crispy and flavourful, the chefs have put numerous spins on this comfort food classic. They’ve even put it it into a fantastic brunch menu.

Brunch at Coop is the perfect way to kick off the weekend after a long work week. It’s greasy, knock your socks with flavour, make you want to go back to bed  type of food. Start your meal off with a mimosa, and a Tater Tot Poutine. The spin on a Canadian classic starts with crispy tater tots, smothered in gravy, mixed with bacon and sriracha, and topped off with a fried egg.

If you’re still up for more, the Nashville Chicken Benny is a must. It’s got all the traditional components of eggs benedict, with one twist – it’s topped off with a spicy hollandaise. There’s plenty on the menu at Coop – something for everyone. They’ve got a great selection of cocktails as well if you want to kick brunch up another notch!

The Brant Pump & Patio
455 Brant Street
Brunch is served: Weekends 9am – 11:30am

This traditional English Pub has quickly become a downtown favourite. Its friendly atmosphere and delicious food have been bringing crowds since it opened a short while ago.

At the Pump you’ll find all the pub classics; chicken wings, Fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches, and more. Similar to English pubs, there are a lot of Asian influenced dishes there as well. While I haven’t had the opportunity to try out the Pump, it’s definitely at the top of my list.

Every weekend they offer a brunch menu, comprised of classic dishes. You’ve got your eggs Benedict, corned beef hash, eggs and bacon, pancakes and more. It’s a great place to bring the family for a beautiful brunch down by the lake.

Lettuce Love Cafe
399 John Street
Brunch is served: Saturday & Sunday 10:00am – 2:00pm

Lettuce Love Cafe is a culinary enigma. It was one the original vegan eateries in the city, and for years has been changing the way we think about vegan food. Their mantra promotes health, mindfulness, sustainability, compassion, and giving.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwhNZWLiuR6/

They promote a plant based diet through education, providing a better understanding of what goes into each dish. You could say they put a vegan spin on classic dishes, but that wouldn’t do them justice. Each dish is unique.

Their Brunch is no different.  They offer fan favourite “bowls” first and foremost. The Jungle Bowl is one of three offered at brunch. It combines almond milk, spinach, avocado, granola, apple, coconut and more – topped with agave for some natural sweetness. There’s also Huevos Rancheros, and more. Quench your thirst with coffee, tea, or one of their fresh juices!

Each day, the chefs create a special gourmet item for breakfast. There’s always something new! There are also breakfast sandwiches, and eggs and bacon, waiting for you to dig in.

On the weekends, they step it up with some cafe favourites. Why not try their light and fluffy Belgian Waffles? Or how about Pane Fresco’s famous Pain Perdu? That’s French Toast stuffed with Nutella and Mascarpone Cheese. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

TAMP Coffee
480 Brant Street

TAMP started on Pine Street with a focus on quality, well-crafted coffee drinks. From lattes, to cappuccinos, to some amazing cold brew coffee. People were flocking to this “Urban Coffee Bar,” to enjoy a coffee and one of the amazing pastries they offer.

When they opened up on Brant Street, they took all the best parts of Pine Streets and added delicious breakfast sandwiches to the menu. Just as they’ve done with their coffee, the folks at TAMP have gone to great lengths to source all their ingredients locally.

I think this review sums it up pretty well:

The breakfast sandwich (plus additional bacon) is to die for in the mornings. Something about the cheese + egg + sauce + bacon + crusty bread – Eric L. Robinson – Google User

TAMP quickly became a popular Downtown Café. Knowledgeable staff is there to guide you through their extensive menu. The décor and location provide a relaxing vibe, making it the perfect place to stop in before you start your day.

The Pepperwood is casual fine dining. With a patio right on Lakeshore, overlooking Spencer Smith Park, it makes the perfect setting for a meal. The staff prides themselves on crafting the best dining experience for every guest. Their menu is full of French influence, with a little touch of the east coast. Everything is made in house, and sourced from local farmers.

Their Brunch has been said to be one of the best, if not, the best in all of Burlington. With a host of options, even the pickiest diner is bound to find something they’ll love.

There’s the classics like Eggs Benedict; perfectly poached eggs, pemeal bacon, on an English muffin, covered in rich hollandaise. Fine dining favourites like smoked salmon and prime rib are incorporated into their 3 egg frittatas.

The Chefs at Pepperwood have a few specialities that could soon become your new favourites. Many restaurants have put out their version of the southern breakfast classic: Chicken and Waffles. But word on the street is, Pepperwood’s take will leave you speechless.

Finally, to save the best for last – the French Toast Melt. So simple, but so brilliant; it takes eggs, and peameal bacon, and sandwiches them together between two pieces of sweet, fluffy French toast.

The best of British Isles are on show at The Dickens; Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash, and more.  Breakfast is no different.
