Downtown Bistro: Meet Mike & Brian
Posted: Jun 15, 2016

In the spirit of Fathers’s Day this month we want to celebrate all the dads that make our downtown a special place to work and play.

We applaud and recognize those dads & daughters and dads & sons that work together in business everyday.

Mike & Brian (Downtown Bistro)

  1. How long have you been working together?

Mike: About five years. We’ve lived in Burlington all our lives and we’ve seen it grow from nothing, to what it is now.

Brian: After I finished school, I went out West for a couple of years, and then worked for a few of the larger corporate chain restaurants before I came here.

  1. Why did you decide to work together/open a business together/come on-board?

Brian: In a word – flexibility. I’ve turned pro-golf, so it allows me time to work on golf, while still allowing me to pay bills!

  1. How do you balance work-life with your personal-relationship?

Mike: We see each other when we see each other, like at family BBQ’s and stuff.

  1. What’s the best thing about working with your son?

Mike: His understanding of the business, and maybe more importantly his understanding of “me”. We have our own roles in the business, so we rarely cross over into one another’s pieces of the business.

Brian: I always have new ideas, some are in the works …

Mike: And some will never see the light of day haha

Brian: True! I’ve built my own clientele here over the years – they ask for me when they come in and they like to chat and ask about my golf career.

  1. What’s the best thing about working with your dad?

If I get under his skin, I know I’ll still have a job the next day haha

The best thing is that he understanding that “this job” pays the bills, but my golf career is my passion. He lets me pursue the thing that I love most.

  1. Do you have any Father’s Day plans (ie lunch/dinner out, golfing, special trip planned)?

Mike:  We’re going to be here working!

Brian: We’re going to NASCAR the week before … does that count?

  1. What was the best Father’s Day gift you ever received?

Mike: That’s a hard one …

Brian: What about that Margaritaville blender I bought you?

Mike: HA! I was actually just going to say that!

Brian: That was the most expensive gift I ever bought you because I finally had enough money to buy you something good!

Mike: Last year you got me that signed Rocky Horror picture show photo from ComicCon – that was pretty cool.

  1. What was the worst?

Nothing. They’ve always been good.

  1. Is there anything special you want to say about your dad?

He’s difficult at work and outside work he is very work-oriented because after being in business for ten years, you’ve gotta have a strong passion for it. I can’t say anything bad about him – he works his a** off and all the things he’s done for me … he grinds it out for me … all the little things he has done, including giving me a job to allow me to keep working at what I love.

  1. Is there anything special you want to say about your son?

He’s grown up to be a special person that I’m proud of. He’s accomplished everything on his own. When he puts his mind to something, he always succeeds.
