When the sun is shining there is no better place than Burlington to strap on your running shoes, dust off your bike, cover any exposed skin with factor 40 and get active.  There are a plethora of opportunities to get moving, whether it’s a walk or cycle along the lake, throwing a Frisbee with your kids at Spencer Smith Park or, for the more adventurous of you out there, renting a stand-up paddleboard and taking your chances on the lake.

The sun is a powerful motivational tool, maybe it’s the vitamin D, the sound of the birds singing or the impending sense of doom that you have a summer holiday booked and you don’t want to scare the children with your naked torso.  Regardless, the fact that the sun get’s people moving is a great thing.  Research has shown that both exercise and sunshine can improve your mood and, after a long winter, it is quite obvious why.

With holidays around the corner, if you’re nervous about starting an exercise routine on your own grab a friend, family member or pet and get moving.  Exercising with a friend is a great way to get fit, not only is it more fun but it holds you accountable to your health and fitness.  Knowing that someone else is relying on you to get fit is a powerful motivational tool and is often the missing link in many health and fitness pursuits.

Becoming accountable for your health and fitness is easy.  Firstly, think of what it is you want to achieve; run a 10k, perform a certain number of push-ups, do a back-flip.  Whatever the goal, the next step is to simply tell somebody.  This could be a family member, friend or the milk man, it really doesn’t matter.  As soon as you tell someone what you want to achieve, the next step is to move heaven and earth to achieve it.

The good news is you live in Burlington!  This means there are plenty of opportunities to get active while getting your dose of vitamin D at the same time.  One such opportunity is Downtown Burlington’s FIT IN THE CORE.  Downtown Burlington is giving you the chance to participate in a fitness class every Sunday morning outside City Hall.  Completely FREE of charge, this is a fantastic opportunity for the whole family to get out in the sun, get active and work off those unwanted pounds that crept up over the long winter months. So what are you waiting for?  Grab a friend and get active!
